Star of the Sea

Today we celebrate the Memorial of St. Anthony of Padua Doctor of the Church.  St. Anthony had a deep devotion to the Blessed Mother and found strength in invoking her name sweet name such as Star of the Sea.  This is a particularly ancient title for Our Lady which is the translation of the the Latin: Stella Maris.  This title emphasizes Mary as a guiding star and sign of hope. His devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary drew him to seek humility, poverty, hiddenness and purity of heart.   Below are some of St. Anthony's quotes on humility which are particularly beautiful:

"The spirit of humility is sweeter than honey, and those who nourish themselves with this honey produce sweet fruit."

An excerpt from one of his sermons:
"The saints are like the stars. In His providence Christ conceals them in a hidden place that they may not shine before others when they might wish to do so. Yet they are always ready to exchange the quiet of contemplation for the works of mercy as soon as they perceive in their heart the invitation of Christ."
