We Have a New Pope
After just 5 votes white smoke was visible rising from the Sistine Chapel. Our New Pope emerged. Pope Francis is his new name! He brings with him many firsts. He is the first Jesuit Pope and the first Pope from South America. There are already wonderful stories emerging about his true humilty. Instead of riding in a special car back to the hotel after his election he chose to take the bus with the other cardinals.
Today in an audience with journalists he explained his choice of St. Francis for his new name. He said that he wished for a Church that was both poor and "for the poor". As the votes were being read he was reminded to not "forget the poor" by a fellow cardinal. These thoughts hung in his mind and he recalls "right away, with regard to the poor, I thought of St Francis of Assisi, then I thought of war...Francis loved peace and that is how the name came to me."
