Anniversary Novena of Masses

Dear Friends,

Children's Rosary at Our Lady
of Sorrows in Sharon, MA held
on Good Friday 2016
The fifth anniversary of the first meeting of the Children's Rosary is on April 10th. We have made it an annual tradition to offer a novena of Masses for the 9 days prior to the anniversary for the fulfillment of Our Lady's plans for the Children's Rosary. We then follow this with 9 days of Masses in thanksgiving. The support for this effort has always been strong and for the past two years we were able to have two Masses offered on each of the 18 days. There is something beautiful about this coming so soon after our Year of Mercy Novena of Prayer and Fasting. It is as if we were stripped down of our earthly attachments leading up to Good Friday. On that day we gave Our Lord our "Yes" to His will. Then with the graces that come through the many Masses said for Our Lady's plans, we are put to work in the vineyard of Our Lord. By offering Masses for the fulfillment of Our Lady's plans for the Children's Rosary, Our Lady's plans for each of us are included within this as we make up the Children's Rosary. With all things, this intense time of prayer and sacrifice is concluded with thanksgiving.

We still have dates open to sponsor for the Anniversary Novena of Masses.

If you would like to sponsor a Mass for the usual donation of $10.00, please email me at blythe@childrensrosary.org . We still have open dates! If there is a particular date you would like to sponsor, please let me know. I plan to request Masses through the Capuchin Missions, but if you would like to request a Mass be said at your Parish or another location this is wonderful as well.

Join Us On Divine Mercy Sunday

This Sunday is Divine Mercy Sunday.  The Children's Rosary has been invited to participate in an annual Divine Mercy event at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in West Hartford, Connecticut USA.

This is something that the children have participated in the past several years and it has been a tremendous blessing.  The event will begin at 2PM ET with a procession of the Divine Mercy Image led by the Knights of Columbus and the Children's Rosary.  One of the priests present will expose the Blessed Sacrament followed by a Children's Rosary.  The children will conclude the Rosary by singing our theme song
Rosary Children.  Jeff Batter who helped with the official recording of this song for our CD will be present and accompanying the children.  The children will be leading the Rosary between 2 and 2:30 PM for those who would like to unify prayers with them.  The children always pray for those unifying with them in prayer.
Confessions will be available between 2-4PM.  Cheryl and Jeff Batter will also sing the Divine Mercy Chaplet which is incredibly moving.  There will be an opportunity to venerate a first class relic of St. Faustina.
We also have a wonderful blessing: the Official Missionary Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe will also be present.  This is an exact replica of Our Lady's Tilma given to St. Juan Diego.  The Missionary image has been blessed by the Rector of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico.

We hope you can join us this weekend!

New Children's Rosary in Newtown, Connecticut

Today we received this picture of our new Children's Rosary group at St. Rose of Lima Parish in Newtown, Connecticut USA.  They held their first meeting on March 24th which was Holy Thursday.  The children came together in prayer at 4:30PM.

One of  the group leaders shared, "we had 12 children and 5 adults (12 apostles/5 wounds of Christ). We thought this was just amazing!"

Receiving word that a new group held their first meeting on Holy Thursday was wonderful news!  Indeed to give Our Lord a new group as He was going into his Passion is particularly special.

St. Rose of Lima Parish has also known considerable suffering.  On December 14, 2012 twenty children between the ages of 6 and 7 were fatally shot at their elementary school in Newtown, CT.  Many of the funerals were held at St. Rose of Lima Parish.  It seemed no one was spared from heartache especially not the children.

To see these little ones now with smiles on their faces coming together in prayer at St Rose of Lima Church is such a welcome sight.  There is such hope present in our children especially when we see them close to Our Blessed Mother and her Son in prayer.

We Conclude Our Fast at the Foot of the Cross

Today is the last day of our Year of Mercy Novena of Prayer and Fasting.  It is the day when Our Lord said, "Not as I will but as You will" (Matthew 26:39).  Today is also when traditionally the Annunciation is celebrated.  "Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to Thy will" (Luke 1:38).  The Catholic Church transfers celebration of the Annunciation to April 4th this year.  Yet, nine months from March 25th is Christmas so even though celebration of the Annunciation is transferred, one is aware of the wonderful connection of these dates.

We set out on this journey of prayer and fasting 9 days ago with the hope that on Good Friday we could say with a humble heart before the Cross, "Thy will be done".  Thus saying, YES, to all God has planned for each of us.

This morning on our last day of the fast, my children gathered round to hear another chapter of the life of St. Jean Vianney that we are reading together.  The chapter as it turned out was called: Conversion of Ars - Prayer and Penance.  St. Jean Vianney had just been assigned to this new country parish and seeing that many had grown distant from the faith he began to offer prayers and penance for the conversion of his parish.  At the end of the chapter an account is given some years later by St. Jean Vianney to a young priest of Montpellier:

"My friend, the devil is not greatly afraid of the discipline and other instruments of penance. That which beats him is the curtailment of one's food, drink and sleep.  There is nothing the devil fears more, consequently, nothing is more pleasing to God.  Oh! how often have I experienced it!  It happened at times that I refrained from food for entire days. On those occasions I obtained, both for myself and for others, whatsoever I asked of Almighty God".

This was a beautiful gift to have this reading come this morning.  It reminded the children and I that although our fasting was not as austere as St. Jean Vianney, that during this last day there are great graces to be obtained from Our Lord.  Let us not lose even one single grace.  May we take the time to quiet ourself and ask for all that is in our heart...  share all that is troubling us.  When we set out I mentioned that often when we undertake such a journey seeking only God's Will,  those things in our lives that seem stuck...become unstuck. May we lay everything at the foot of the Cross today.  With Our Blessed Mother beside us, let us surrender everything to His Will. Amen.

Divine Mercy Novena Starts Today!

Good Friday is the day that Jesus asked Saint Faustina that a 9 day novena to the Divine Mercy be initiatied.  He gave her a different group of souls to pray for each day.  Along with those intentions the Chaplet of Divine Mercy is said as well.  The novena leads up to Divine Mercy Sunday instituted by Pope John Paul II. Attached is a link to the Divine Mercy Novena and how to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy.

When Do You Feel God's Pleasure?

Several weeks ago we watched a family movie about a group of British runners who ran in the 1924 Olympics.  One of the runners was a Christian Missionary from Scotland.  He had spent most of his life in the missions  in China.  However,  he returned to Scotland for several years.  During that time he began to run races and quickly moved to a position where he was chosen for the Olympic team.  His sister wondered if he was becoming too distracted from his missionary work.  To this he replied, "God made me for a purpose but he also made me fast;  when I run, I feel God's pleasure".

During the Olympics the young missionary, Liddell, was placed in a qualifying race that ran on Sunday.  He refused to run the race thus losing the ability to run his best distance: the 100 meters.  He was given the chance to run in a longer distance with a race on a different day.  Though this was a difficult decision he felt that to run a race on the Sabath (Sunday) would no longer honor or please Our Lord.  In choosing to honor God, it seemed God took pleasure in helping him.  One of the Americans is reported to have given Liddell a paper before the race.  On it was written, "He that honors Me, I will honor" (1Samuel 2:30). Liddell went on to win the gold in the 400M.  It was a moving story to see, one that began a discussion in our own family.  At the dinner table, I asked my daughter when she felt God's pleasure?  After some thought she replied, when I take pictures.  All in the room nodded their heads.  Indeed, the Lord had given Alina a gift to see beauty all around her and capture it.  For a child who spent a good bit of her childhood in difficult situations living in an orphanage, it is a particularly special gift Our Lord gave her.  Suffering has not dulled her eye to see the magnificance around her.  Alina spends a good deal of time walking places as I do not drive.  She always carries a camera.  She loves to share all the beauty she sees: the first flowers of spring, a new robin returning,  the flower garden she passes each day as she makes her way to the post office.  A selection of some of her photos is included in this post.

In thinking about Alina, I also began to reflect on when I feel God's pleasure.  Unlike, Liddell, I was not made fast.  Instead, I was given a genetic condition that affects joints, among other things, and renders ones body very weak.  So weak in fact, that one has to ask for help for basic things.  One might think this not a special gift but over time I have come to see it was a beautiful gift.  In this way, I feel God's pleasure in my weakness.

As we are on the final days of our Divine Mercy Novena of Prayer and Fasting, it seemed a perfect time to think about when we each feel God's pleasure in each of us.  Through fasting we can see more clearly Our Lord working in our lives.  We can see His gifts with more clarity.  In recognizing His gifts, it gives us pause to see if we are using them and likewise if we have properly thanked God for such treasures he bestowed in each of us.

We began our journey last Thursday with our nine day Year of Mercy Novena of Prayer and Fasting that we might say on Good Friday, "Thy will be done".  We are almost there.  Do not give up.

Palm Sunday Processions

Several of our Children's Rosary groups in Pakistan were able to help lead Palm Sunday Processions in their towns.  Our Children's Rosary group in Musa Dughl is pictured above. The children were able to carrying crosses made of palms through the streets on the way to the Church.
Our Children's Rosary group in Ugu Chal (pictured below) also helped to lead a Procession.
The children of Ugu Chal helped to spread rose petals through the streets. Members of the Children's Rosary in Chahl Klaen, Pakistan and Buanpura Pakistan also helped with Palm Sunday Processions.

One of the beautiful gifts of having Children's Rosary groups throughout the world is that the children can see the beautiful customs and ways other children express their faith from around the world.  A special thank you to Babu Chand for sharing these pictures and helping to coordinate these efforts in four towns on Sunday.

Visit of the Relics of the Passion

Dear Friends,
Please forgive my delay in sharing all the wonderful blessings from the visit of the Relics of the Passion on Wednesday.  It has been a difficult task to put into words the beauty of the evening.  This visit was a precious gift to the Children's Rosary. We are extremely grateful to the Apostolate for Holy Relics for adding St. Helena Church in West Hartford, Connecticut to their Tour of Mercy.  The children were so grateful that they were able to to help in hosting such special pieces from Our Lord's life.  While many children were able to attend, we carried all of you who live far away with us in our hearts.

The children naturally seemed to love their role as hosts for the evening.  Children arrived early and quickly took to their places at each of the four entrances.  As each person arrived they were greeted and given a program and a blessed Children's Rosary bookmark.  People slowly made their way in and by 7PM the Church was full.  Eleven children volunteered to process into the Church with the relics.  They were each paired with a member of the Knight's of Columbus Color Guard.  The children carried symbols of each of the relics while the Knights held the relics. As the formal program began each relic was described and a reflection read about the relic.
The relics included:
A piece of the True Cross, which was discovered by St. Helena
A piece of the Holy Table from the room where the Last Supper took place
A piece of the Column of Flagellation
A piece of the Crown of Thorns
A replica of the Holy Nail, fashioned using filings from the true nails, making it a relic of a lesser class.
A relic from the head of St. Longinus, the centurion who pierced the side of Christ
A picture of (the effigy of) the Veil of Veronica touched to the original with a Vatican seal attesting to the fact.
A piece of the exterior wrapping fro the Shroud of Turin
First class relics of each of the12 Apostles.

During each reading a relic was held up by a Knight and a member of the Children's Rosary elevated a symbol.  In some cases two children held symbols of each relic.  One of the things that was particularly evident to those attending was the care and respect that the children took in honoring Our Lord.  Denise Serafini who represented the Apostolate for Holy Relics that evening shared:
"I can't thank the (children) enough for the reverent way in which they took part.  The example that they set is a true indication of just how much Our Lady loves them for their devotion."

After all the meditations were read for the 9 relics there was time for personal veneration. A line was formed and slowly each person had a chance for personal veneration.  Children came forward with their families.  Two of our members Nathan and Hannah came with their grandmother.  Each was blessed with the relic of the true cross over their heart.  The Scripture quote came to mind several times that evening, "Let the children come to me"(Mark 10:14).  Indeed, the children did come.  These children knew well about the Passion through their prayers of the Rosary.  They came to love and console Our Lord.  In their innocence and purity the simplicity of their gifts touched many hearts.

During the veneration I was able to come before each of the 9 relics and recommend all the members of the Children's Rosary.  I also prayed for all the intentions submitted to the Children's Rosary, holding our intention sheet to each relic.  In a special way all the hearts with the names of those joining our Year of Mercy Novena of Prayer and Fasting were touched to each relic and those individuals lifted up in prayer.  The evening extended several hours and each person was able to spend time praying before each relic.  Some of the children and adults felt moved to go up multiple times.  Pastor Fr. Crowley and Fr. Dawson offered the Sacrament of Reconciliation during the time of veneration.  Many families availed themselves of this grace.

The evening was very special. The Children's Rosary wishes to express our gratitude first to Our Lord for such a blessing to be able to honor his Passion in such a special way.  We wish to thank the Apostolate for Holy Relics for accepting our invitation to come.  A special thank you to the Knights of Columbus Color Guard for being part of the evening and in a special way mentoring the children.  We wish to thank Fr. Crowley and Fr. Dawson and the Parish of St. Helena who helped in welcoming this visit of the Relics of the Passion.  A thank you to all the musicians who shared their talents.  One of the last people to venerate the relics was the gentlemen who played the violin.  He brought his instrument to touch each relic.  It was so moving to see such a souls taking what they have been given and using it to glorify God.  We pray that through our Year of Mercy Novena of Prayer and Fasting which began on February 17th that each one of us may say, "Your will be done" and in so doing allow all of our gifts to be used in honor of God.

Your Friend in Christ,
Blythe

Keeping You All in Prayer

Lent is a time of trial and temptation.  Through Scripture we know Our Lord underwent trials himself in the desert (Luke 4:2).  We should not be surprised if we are struggling more during these days leading up to Easter. Yet, there is great consolation in knowing that so many are praying for us around the world.  One of our young members of the Children's Rosary in Ashraf town Pakistan, holds up his Children's Rosary group's intention box.  This is where the children put petitions for their family and also include the intention of all the members of the Children's Rosary and all who help the Children's Rosary.  In this way, we are being covered in a blanket of prayers each day through all the Children's Rosary groups meeting around the world.  In turn, we pray for them.  In this way, we share our love with those around the world.  As we try to walk on the straight path there is such consolation and strength that comes through the prayers of so many little ones from around the world.
Over the next week we have many Children's Rosary groups meeting around the world. Please consider joining the children in prayer.
