A Gift to Our Holy Father Who is in Need of our Support

Please consider adding your name to our letter and gift to be sent to Our Holy Father this Friday

VATICAN CITY (AP) Pope Benedict is said to be "saddened" by the discovery that one of his closest aides, Paolo Gabriele, 46, his valet or butler (photo, Gabriele, the butler, helping the Pope to adjust his red cape), has betrayed his trust, copying and disseminating secret Vatican documents from the Pope's own apartments.

The words from the gospel today echo in light of the hurtful things being said about our Holy Father in the press, and "they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him" (Mark 10:34).  Last week in the gospel, Jesus in prayer says to His Father "the world has hated them because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world".(John 17:14)

As the Vicar of Christ on this Earth Our Holy Father is rejected as Jesus was 2,000 years ago.  We however have a chance as Simon the Cyrenian did to put our shoulder under the cross and lift some of the weight. We can wash his beaten face as our Lady did for her Son.  How can we do this.  We can join together in an effort that I pray will spread like a wildfire across the globe.  Attached is a letter to The Holy Father.  It was a letter written before we knew of the hurt shown to Our Holy Father. It shares with him the efforts of the children's rosary and the prayers that are being said for him.  It also shares in a personal way that we love and support him.  We will be sending this letter Friday June 1st.  I pray that Our Blessed Mother will assist us on her Feast of the Visitation and bring this letter into a great many homes. As we have been praying to be the extended hands of Mary and Jesus this is a moment when we are called to action.  If you would like your name added to this letter comment on this posting or email us at blythe.kaufman@gmail.com  Please include your name, city and country.  If you are including any children's names please include their ages (if you don't want to use last names of children that is fine).  Please share this with as many people as you can.  Anyone can be a member of the children's rosary one only has to tell the Lord in your heart of your desire to join our group. The letter will be sent to our Archbishop who we pray will send this personally to Our Holy Father.  Our Archbishop is aware of the work of the children's rosary and has always been supportive. Please pray that the letter will speedily reach His Holiness.

Thank you all.

God Bless!!

Dear Holy Father,
May I thank God continuously for the gift of having this letter reach your hands and may I in the same breath thank Him if he deems it His Will that it not.  The children’s rosary would like to humbly give you a present.  It is a handmade bookmark made by and 11 year old girl in our group.  It is one of many bookmarks and children’s Bibles given out on Divine Mercy Sunday 2012 when the children were celebrating the 1 year anniversary of our group.  We are dedicating the upcoming year to renewal of family prayer.  To this end we are giving out read aloud children’s Bibles to families and bookmarks to single individuals or those living a consecrated life.  It is our prayer that they will begin family prayer in their homes and begin to read scripture daily.  An inspiration came that these families would need help and guidance as they set out to begin family prayer and reading of scripture.  Just as Jesus sent out the disciples two by two we decided to ask Saints to help these families.  An individual novena was said for each Bible and bookmark for the intention below.
MAY THE CHILDREN’S ROSARY, THEIR FAMILIES, THOSE ASSOCIATED WITH THE CHILDREN’S ROSARY INCLUDING OUR PRIESTS, OUR BISHOP AND OUR HOLY FATHER THE POPE BE THE EXTENDED HANDS OF OUR BLESSED MOTHER AND HER SON.  MAY WE GATHER A GREAT MANY SOULS ESPECIALLY YOUNG PEOPLE FOR THE LORD.  MAY WE EXPERIENCE RENEWAL OF FAMILY PRAYER AND SPREAD IT ACROSS THE GLOBE. IN A SPECIAL WAY WE ASK EACH SAINT TO CHOOSE AN INDIVIDUAL, FAMILY OR A PRIEST, ASSOCIATED WITH OUR CHILDREN’S ROSARY GROUP TO LEAD IN THEIR SPIRITUAL JOURNEY. DEAR SAINT PRAY FOR OUR EXTENDED GROUP THAT WE MAY EMBODY THE VIRTUES YOU EXEMPLIFIED HERE ON EARTH. AMEN
We have asked that the each Saint choose a family, individual or priest to lead in their spiritual journey and a novena to the Holy Spirit was said to inspire the pairing.  The very first bookmark to be chosen on Divine Mercy Sunday was for you.  The Saint that chose to lead you in your spiritual journey was St. Charles Lwanga the martyr from Uganda who is also one of the patron Saints of young people.  The bookmark was chosen at random so not to influence the work of the Holy Spirit.   I happened to recognize the Saint and recalled that one of the little boys in our group who is 8 was the person who said the novena to St. Charles Lwanga.  The little boy, who said the prayers for you also has made it known of his desire to become a priest.  May God’s Will be done in all things as He sees fit. As you can see from the intention which is prayed with each novena that with each novena and rosary, we are praying in a special way for you.  To date we have approximately 255 novenas completed or in progress and daily rosaries are also said for that intention.
The children’s rosary group began in a chapel at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in West Hartford CT USA.  However,  we are now attracting members from the region who come to our monthly rosary.  We recently also started a website www.childrensrosary.blogspot.com which has been viewed by over 4,000 people from 76 countries.  To be a member of the children’s rosary one only has to tell the Lord in their heart of their desire to join our group and then all the novenas and rosaries said daily include them.  We hope in your heart you will join our children’s rosary.  At our monthly rosary the children take turns leading the decades and always conclude with prayers for you Our Holy Father.  So far the children have given out over 160 Bibles and plan to give out many more Bibles and continue our novenas so as to spread renewal of family prayer across the globe.  Fr. Jacob the pastor of Holy Trinity Church in Hartford, an inner city Parish, asked the children’s rosary for Bibles for the families of his parish.  Thirty-five were given to him each with a Saint written inside the cover.  Thirty-five Bibles were given  to a priest in Boston doing hospice counseling.   Over thirty Bibles were given to our second grade class at St. Thomas Apostle School and 25 will be given to the fifth grade class graduating.  Each person who receives a Bible is asked to say the novena to a new saint for another family.  In this way many more families can continue receiving Bibles with prayers said for them. We have begun having weekly Masses said for renewal of family prayer as we know that we will need much help in this endeavor. This is truly only the beginning of our work and we ask only that the Lord will use us to further His plans in this world.  We know that our Church is a living Church and families are the lungs of the Church. If they are strong then our Church will be strong.  We pray that the Lord will use us to be His extended hands and those of His mother so that we may reach out to one family at a time and extend renewal of family prayer across the globe.
Thank you Holy Father for your precious time in reading this letter.  Know that the children and families of the children’s rosary love you, support you, and pray for you daily.  May the Blessed Mother cover you with her mantle of peace and may Jesus protect you and keep you close to His Sacred Heart.
Your dear friends in Christ,
The Children’s Rosary

A Soul Reaches Out

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Act 2:4)
And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. (Act 2:6)
Yesterday was Pentecost.  I heard this reading read at Mass.  Later while walking to Church for a Divine Mercy Hour with adoration the reading came back into my mind.  All "heard them speaking in his own language".  I have heard of certain individuals being given the gift of a new language immediately and from that point on they speak fluently in a new tongue.  I wondered if the Lord would ever decide to grant me the knowledge of another language as I have always struggled learning more than English.  I do know a bit of Spanish but at a very basic level.  Then an idea came into my mind, a very certain idea.  The Lord had given me a universal language that He spoke on earth.  One that resonates throughout all time.  The language He gave me was suffering.  I thought of the priest who said Mass that morning at St. Edward the Confessor Church whose hands were trembling throughout Mass.  He would end Mass saying that he suffered from familial tremors and though he takes medication sometimes the tremors can be severe and they make him self conscious.  Immediately upon hearing this personal confession that he was embarrassed I felt a fondness for him even though it was the first time I had ever seen him.  As we drove away from the Church I saw a young priest, one I had met before who was walking with a significant limp.  He swung his leg around with every step.  My heart was moved to see this.
The reading from Mass today now comes to mind:
In this you rejoice, though now for a little while you may have to suffer various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold which though perishable is tested by fire, may redound to praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 1:6-7)
You may wonder what suffering I have experienced.  While I was pregnant with my son Asher I was diagnosed with a autosomal dominant genetic condition that effects all of the collagen in my body.  The geneticist said that pregnancy is not recommended and that I would experience a significant decline.  He was right.  My body turned almost to jelly and I began to have multiple joint dislocations.  My hands and feet were the worst.  However, as certain bones in my hands would dislocate muscles would tighten to guard the injured area.  By 2009, more joints would become involved until I had dislocations in both hands elbows and a frozen right shoulder.  Sleeping became almost impossible.  I could not extend my arms and had pillows propping them up.  I was taking pain medication every two hours with never complete relief.  I was no longer practicing dentistry, I needed help dressing, preparing food, and lost the ability to drive.  Times became dark.  It was then that through confession and Divine Mercy that the Lord stretched down His hand and pulled me out of despair.  He would however, not take away the disability.  My body over a very short period of time, to the complete surprise to my doctors, did begin to stabilize.  The Lord took hold of me.  He brought be to the edge of a precipice and held me there just on the edge.  Each day a gift that I did not go tumbling down but never on solid ground to stand by myself.  This was a gift.  No longer could I trick myself in to thinking I could live life of my own strength or talents.  I was by grace of God living each day.  The Lord gave me back the ability to walk more than a few steps and now I walk 1.2 miles to Church each day (2.4 miles round trip).  As I leave my house each day I ask that with each step I take to and from church a prayer of thanksgiving go up to Jesus for the gift of being able to walk.  I still suffer dislocations and my body is still extremely limited.  I do not drive and cannot open doors for myself.  I am for all functional purposes at the functional level of a 1 year old.  My mind is still sound so I thank the Lord for His generosity.
Having shared with you some of the road I have come by to write this entry may I go on to share a bit more.  May I share a prayer I had some 2 years ago.  I had ordered a Mount Carmel Scapular.  I had it blessed at a very special Mass and wore it with Love for Our Lady.  I asked Our Lady if I could keep this scapular the rest of my life as it was so special to me.  I remembered that John Paul II had received a scapular on His first Holy Communion and kept it his whole life.  One day I noticed the braided cord began to fray.  It continued to unwind and break.  One morning I woke and noticed there was only one string holding it together all the others had broken.  With my hands as they are I knew I could not fix it.  I told Our Lady in prayer that morning that this was the last day I would wear the scapular as I was afraid it might be lost.  I went off to physical therapy.  As I was getting ready to leave the therapist's office, my physical therapist, Judy noticed the scapular.  She is Jewish and did not know what it was but offered to take it and mend it.  I gave her the scapular and the following week she returned it.  She had made a special trip to the store to find a brown thread that exactly matched the braiding of the scapular.  I told her of my prayer to the Blessed Mother and how she had been my miracle to restore my dear scapular.  Our Lady had worked through another person.  This experience made a lasting impression on me.  Our Lord by choice wants to work through us.  He needs us to be His hands on earth.  Our Blessed Mother sees everything and loves her children as the most perfect of mothers but she needs us.
Today in the Gospel Jesus is asked how one reaches the Kingdom of God. He answers:
The Eye of the Needle
“It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, "Then who can be saved?"Jesus looked at them and said, "With men it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God." (Mark 10: 25-27)

As a child I heard this reading and thought it is impossible for a camel to go through the eye of a needle.  Years later I was listening to a talk by Dr. Jim Dobbins who explained that the eye of a needle was a gate in Jerusalem.  It was more convenient to enter the city there but it was too low for a camel to walk through the gate.  Therefore the camel had to bend down on their knees and crawl through.  It was far easier to pass through another gate but that was some distance away.  Therefore,  with some struggle and suffering even a rich person can enter the Kingdom of God.  The Lord is telling us salvation is not a test where a set number of people must fail.  We all can be saved.  I attended a dental school that was pass/fail.  We were told that they wanted all of us to pass.  Therefore we all helped each other and shared notes.  We were aware of other schools where there were grades and an element of competition existed.  It was not uncommon for required reading to go missing from the library so that others might have a disadvantage.  The Lord does not want us to compete with each other.  We must work together so that we might all be saved.  What then can we do?  Let us squeeze every ounce of goodness out of our lives to save others and save ourselves.  How can we do this.  Offer everything up to the Lord.  Begin your day with a morning offering.  The prayer is listed on the menu part of this site under prayers.  Consecrate yourself to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary for protection.  St. Faustina found that her prayers were the most powerful when she unified them to the suffering of Jesus on the Cross.
Every morning I offer my suffering through the Immaculate Heart of Mary to be unified to the Holy wounds of Jesus for the conversion of sinners.  I offer any indulgences I may be offered in the day to Our Lady for souls in purgatory.  I offer all the times I feel tired through the Immaculate Heart of Mary to be unified to the times when Jesus was tired during His passion so that the children’s rosary, my Parish, my family and myself may work tireless to help save souls.  I offer all these things through the Immaculate Heart of Mary so that however small the sacrifice is it will be received well, as it is carried to Our Lord by His mother. I share these things not to bring attention to myself but only that we may not waste even one bit of struggle or suffering that could have saved a soul.
Yesterday as I walked to adoration ideas poured into my heart.  Feelings that we “the children’s rosary” could through the working of the Holy Spirit renew the face of the world.  Later in the afternoon as I found myself struggling with the kids and loosing my temper those strong inspirations seemed so distant.  It was only as I walked to church this morning in prayer that they returned.  The inspirations that one person can change the world is looked upon by many as naivete.  What does that exactly mean, it is the quality of being unexperienced or unsophisticated. It is true the more time we spend in the world the more the flesh pulls us away from the Spirit.  The times when we feel, due to our sinfulness, that we could never exert positive change are the times when the flesh is directing our thought.  The moments when we feel we can change the world are the moments of clarity when we see what we are meant to be.  As St. Catherine of Sienna said, “If we become who we are we will set the whole world on fire”.  Yes, Yes, Yes!!!!  If we recognize those feelings of defeat as not from the Lord then we are half way to following the true inspiration from the Lord that we can make a change.  The Holy Spirit has poured His gifts upon us yesterday and I felt in a special way the gift of Knowledge. This is the ability to evaluate created things at their true worth.
The gospel closed today by saying "With men it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God." (Mark 10: 27)
The priest at the Divine Mercy hour had us meditate on one line.  “Jesus is the Word”.  If Jesus is the Word present in Holy Scripture would you want to bring Him into your home?  If you do want Jesus in your home would you lock Him up or put Him under a pile of papers.  Or would you put Him in a place visible in your home.  Would you open the book and read with your family His words.  So often I have to ask those at Church to open a door for me to enter the Church.  Now I ask you for one more thing, open the door of your home to Jesus.  He is waiting outside.  Call Him inside.  He needs the door to be opened and then He will set to work.  Why does He keep asking us to pray.  Look around you and see the sin around us.  This is why we must pray.  May our families be like small prayer groups.  We are strong together.  The apostles were just 12 and 2,000 years later  Christians cover the earth.  We are more than 12 and we have the Holy Spirit to guide us.  Cleanse your heart in confession and the Spirit will be able to speak all the louder.  All things are possible with God.  Let us begin together!!  Please if this touches you leave a comment that we may all know we are not alone.  That our hands are outstretched and there is someone else to take hold and reach out even further than we could have done alone. Amen, Amen, Amen.

Reflections from Pentecost

A look back at Pentecost 2011

Last year the children's rosary made hand cut flames each with a gift of the Holy Spirit on it.  We then prayed a novena to the Holy Spirit asking Him to bestow a gift on each family who took one.  Each flame was held individually during a family rosary.  They were prayed over by our morning rosary group at our parish and then the children's rosary also prayed over them at our monthly meeting on Pentecost.  We asked each family who took a flame to say family prayer for 2 weeks and also pray for our Parish.  Shortly after Pentecost I wrote this letter to our three priests at our parish.  The letter I have attached below:

Children's rosary praying over flames at our monthly rosary on Pentecost 2011
I want to take the opportunity to thank you all for your leadership with the events of Pentecost.  Each of you was so integral to making the day a pure joy.  Fr. Moran in his homily the week before Pentecost challenged us all to take a chance on loving another person.  We all took a chance on Pentecost.  I approached each one of you with the idea to give out flames with the gifts of the Holy Spirit on them.  It felt like a huge risk to come to each of you with this idea.  You each took a chance and embraced the idea. As someone who had a first row seat at the responses of people taking the flames I can tell you the chance was well worth it.  The love which was extended to each parishioner was returned 10-fold.    One older women took a flame looked at it and clutched it to her chest.  She looked at me with tears in her eyes and mouthed the words you have touched my heart and hurried out of the church overcome with emotion. Little children as old as two made their way up and reached up to receive the flame for their family.  An African American teenage boy quietly took a flame stood in front of the poster looking for the meaning.  I read the meaning to him.  He had been so quiet that I wondered if he would speak.  And then he did and he said "that sounds good, thank you" and gave me a huge smile ear to ear.  I had been unable to read him and then with the smile I knew we had him, his heart had been touched as well. Some leaned into me and whispered that they would say the prayers.  A petite older man I had met weeks ago with a wheel chair bound daughter Patty came forward. He saw a flame had fallen to the ground. He picked it up and said he felt it was meant for him.  Having witnessed the gentleness of this man for his adult daughter who had such severe disabilities I was not surprised in his humility he would be drawn to the flame forgotten and not noticed on the ground.

The older gentleman being confirmed was one of the first to receive a flame at the 10:30 and was beaming as he looked at his gift.  The most moving site for me was to see the line after the 5:00 Mass.  A Mass which had lasted longer than a Palm Sunday Mass and yet there was a long line down the full length of the church waiting for up to 15 minutes for their flame.  They weren't chatting or talking on their cell phone or texting.  They were reverently waiting for the Holy Spirit to bestow on them a priceless gift.  Some of the younger ones took longer to separate one flame from another yet the crowd waited without anxiety. I thanked them for their patience and their smiling eyes looked back at me.  The images of each person coming forward are burned into my memory.  Years ago when I first started coming to Church at St. Thomas I was a young relatively healthy dental student.  I often went to the 5:00 Mass and rushed in and out.  I listened to the priest but otherwise felt like a stranger in a crowd of unknown people. To stand before the parishioners of the 5:00 Mass many of whom I still do not know and see love and patience in their eyes was a moment that won't be forgotten.  It was a moment when one small soul says to another soul I prayed for you and you have meaning to me.  I pray the Lord blesses your family.  The receiving soul smiles and in that the miracle of the Lord is present. Amen

Thank you and may the Lord protect each of you as you so beautifully minister to our Parish.

Do you love Me?

Today in the Gospel there is a wonderful exchange between Jesus and Peter.
Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs."
A second time he said to him, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep."
He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep.(John 21:15-19)
I love this Gospel and for a time last year I found myself repeating it as I approached the priest to receive Communion.  I would repeat Jesus’ question “Do you love me” and then just before taking communion I would say internally Yes, Lord I love you.
I have read that Jesus never tires of hearing that we love him. Could it be that God gave us the ability to be parents so that we might know how He feels for us.  Just as I never tire of telling my littlest child I love you, I have found that as he gets older he has less and less interest in giving hugs and saying I love you to my husband and I.  He is now 5 and I can remember just a few short years ago when he would be so happy when I called him over for a hug.  I can see why Jesus loves the smallest children.  They relish in the love shown to them.  The longer they are in the world the more independent they become.  To hear your baby growing up still tell you without asking that they love you brings a smile to your heart.  How Jesus must wait for us to remember to tell Him the same thing.
May this Gospel remind us how much Jesus needs to hear that we love him.  Even if we think he knows our hearts to vocalize it aloud or even internally must console His wounded heart.

Novena to the Holy Trinity

A week from Sunday is Holy Trinity Sunday.  In honor of this Feast may we consider beginning a novena this Friday thus preparing ourselves spiritually for this Holy Feast.
The Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and Our Blessed Mother in her heavenly glory, wearing a Trinitarian habit.
Holy Trinity, I am humbled by the thought of your greatness! Your power overwhelms me. Your infinite goodness causes my heart to burst forth in songs of praise.

God, loving Father, you are always by me when I need you. You wait patiently when I stray. You never tire of forgiving when I contradict your Holy Will. You sustain me even when I am foolish enough to think that I do not need your help.
Holy, loving, merciful Father, I thank you for giving me your Son, Jesus, to be the Way, the Life, the Truth.

Lord Jesus, you are the bridge and the path to the Father. When I put my hand in yours, the journey is easy and sure. You chose to become man to take upon yourself my weaknesses. You died to wash away my sins. You arose to show me that my destiny is eternal life.

Lord, Holy Spirit, pour your love into my soul, so that I prefer your eternal designs to my own. Make me compassionate like the Father, self-sacrificing like Jesus, full of love like you. Help me when I falter. Lift me when I fall. Inspire me to do always what is expected of a disciple of Jesus.

Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, One God who alone are holy and good, I adore you. Do not permit me to worship the false idol of myself or the idols of transitory success and material riches. I thank you for the blessings you have bestowed on me in the past and I entrust myself and my dear ones entirely to your Divine Providence.

TO YOU BE PRAISE, GLORY AND HONOR FOREVER, BLESSED TRINITY.

Two members of our children's rosary group

Consider including our Children’s rosary petition in your novena.  Many thanks.
IN A SPECIAL WAY WE ASK THE HOLY SPIRIT TO GUIDE EACH ONE OF US ACCORDING TO THE WILL OF GOD.

To become a member of the children's rosary one only has to tell the Lord in their heart of their desire to be a part of our group.  You will then be included in all the novenas being said and all of the rosaries being prayed daily.
