What About You?

Marianne age 6, a member of the
Children's Rosary at the WMOF
This past week members of the Children's Rosary attended the World Meeting of Families (WMOF) in Philadelphia.  Nine children made the trip.  In between the beautiful Masses and our visits to Adoration the children helped answer questions at our Children's Rosary booth and circulated around the convention center handing out Children's Rosary bookmarks and telling people about the Children's Rosary prayer group movement.  Little Marianne, only 6 years old, seemed to be one of the most enthusiastic of the children.  She had a big smile across her face as she went around with her older siblings handing out bookmarks.   In thinking about the words Pope Francis repeated over and over again during the Saturday Papal Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of Sts Peter and Paul, "What about you? What are you going to do?",  I could not help but think of the children.  Pope Francis was repeating the words Pope Leo XIII had spoken to the young Katharine Drexel at their meeting.  These words changed her life.

On Saturday the Holy Father was addressing both religious and laity and their role in the Church. The Holy Father went on to say:

"First, those words-"What about you?"- were addressed to a young person, a young women with high ideals, and they changed her life.  They made her think of the immense work that had to be done, and to realize that she was being called to do her part.  How many young people in our parishes and schools have the same high ideals, generosity of spirit, and love for Christ and the Church!  Do we challenge them? Do we make space for them and help them to do their part? To find ways of sharing their enthusiasm and gifts with our communities, above all in works of mercy and concern for others? Do we share our own joy and enthusiasm in serving the Lord?"  In thinking about these words I couldn't help but think of these words falling on the hearts of these children.  In so many ways their hearts are open to such a call.  They have joy and a readiness to share their love of Our Lord.  Seeing the children praying and also inviting other children to participate in the Children's Rosary, one can see the important role these little ones have in the future of Our Church.  So often we marveled how receptive people were to hear about the Children's Rosary as the invitation came from a tiny person.  I thought also of the members of the Children's Rosary both in the United States and also in far areas such as Pakistan where the children pray together both in the Church but also out with the poor and sick.  The children blossom when give such an opportunity to come together to pray and give glory to God.

It would also seem that the Lord smiles upon these little ones helping Him in the field.  Little Marianne was so delighted to meet a "Swiss Guard" in costume as she was walking around sharing information about the Children's Rosary.  Such small gifts mean so much to the children and it would seem Our Lord was very generous with them.

Our Holy Father asked us to "make space" for the young to do their part.  The Children's Rosary honors this request and seeks to give our children such support in their prayer lives and also a means to make a difference in the Church Universal.

It is my humble hope that many will see this challenge from Our Holy Father as an invitation to help our young people and support them in their prayer lives.

Two Years Ago Today

On September 29th 2013 the Feast of the Archangels, EWTN Global Catholic Network aired an interview about the Children's Rosary.  This airing was a very special gift as it gave many around the world a window into a Children's Rosary prayer group.  Many reached out after the airing with interest in beginning a Children's Rosary in their parish.  Now two years later, many of those that wrote or called following the airing have begun groups in their parishes or in schools.  It would seem that such a date could not go by without a special remembrance and gratitude to God the Father and the Archangels  for reaching so many and bringing forth so much fruit.  For those of you unfamiliar with the EWTN interview that aired on Sept 29th 2013 I have included the link HERE.

September 29th 2013 was also a special date as it concluded our participation in the International Week of Prayer and Fasting that year.  Members of the Children's Rosary had kicked off the week by traveling to the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC USA to lead a Rosary during the International Prayer Vigil.  This year the International Week of prayer and fasting will be held from October 16th-24th 2015.

Rainbow at the Papal Mass

Saturday Pope Francis Arrived in Philadelphia USA.  His first stop was the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul.  The children and I did not have tickets for this event but we ventured out early making our way closer and closer to the Basilica.  Passing through Security just as the Mass started we found ourselves right next the Basilica.  The Holy Father was inside and we could see and hear everything from the Jumbotrons. Even though we were outside there was a feeling we were connected in a special way to Our Holy Father and those praying inside. Throughout the Mass I kept recommending all the members of the Children's Rosary to Our Lord.  Just after the readings several people in front of me pointed to the sky.  We looked up to see a beautiful rainbow over us.  What a beautiful surprise!!! This lasted abut 5 minutes.  Our Holy Father's homily was so beautiful continuing to repeat the call to all of us "What about you?".  Asking us as laity what role we will play. As the children and I periodically would look toward the heavens we could see rainbows coming and going throughout the Mass.  At communion a large rainbow extended across the sky. Indeed it felt like all heaven was peering down on this little place.

We are beginning our trip home this morning and look forward to adding more pictures and sharing more of the experiences here.  Please know you all have been very close to us throughout this trip.  Many seeds for new Children's Rosary have been sown during this trip in the hearts of those visiting here from distant corners of the world.  Please pray for them.

Thank you all and God Bless.

Knotted Grotto in Honor of Pope Francis' Visit

Blessings from Philadelphia and the World Meeting of Families!!  As you may have read in earlier posts 9 children and 4 adults are here representing the Children's Rosary.  The children have been helping to run an informational booth about the Children's Rosary at the World Meeting of Families.  In between our time at the booth we have been visiting the Adoration Chapel at the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul.  They have had perpetual Adoration all week beginning last Sunday evening.
As one enters the Basilica Chapel for Adoration, one passes through a most beautiful Knotted Grotto inspired by the painting of Mary Undoer of Knots. As a special gift to Pope Francis who will celebrate Mass at this Basilica tomorrow morning, thousands of intentions have been woven into this grotto.  Each intention knotted together.   Many of those that wrote the initial intentions were children and the homeless from the area.  These intentions were joined by many added by pilgrims visiting from around the world. Thousands if not millions of people have flooded into Philadelphia for this historic week.

It is breathtaking to see this Grotto with so many intentions from people traveling here from around the world and also those who call this city home.

Dear friends, please know we prayed for you all in Adoration and included you in this Knotted Grotto. Asher is holding a ribbon which reads: for the intentions of the members of the Children's Rosary.  Another ribbon that was tied on read: for all the members of the Children's Rosary. A third ribbon which was added to the Knotted Grotto was for the intentions of Our Blessed Mother.

Having attended Mass this week at the Cathedral it was beautiful to hear that during Mass the intentions placed in this Grotto were being lifted up in prayer. There is a hope that tomorrow Our Holy Father will walk through this Grotto as he enters the Cathedral and pray for these intentions.

Thank you for all of your prayers and please know we are praying very hard for you here.

Mass Offered Today for all Members of the Children's Rosary

Children's Rosary in Corvallis, Oregon USA
Today a Mass was offered by the Capuchin Friars for all the members of the Children's Rosary and all those who help the Children's Rosary.  We continue to have a Mass said for the this intention on the 25th of each month. The Eucharist is such a powerful gift from Our Lord that when I wanted to extend thanksgiving to you all I knew of no better way to express my gratitude.  May Our Lord's love be poured down on all of you through the powerful sacrifice of the Holy Mass.

The Children's Rosary Welcomes Pope Francis to the World Meeting of Families

This video is a little gift to Pope Francis from the children.  It is a welcome from all the members of the Children's Rosary who have been praying for him.  These children speak for the many who are spread across 5 continents that meet regularly in their Children's Rosary prayer groups. We hope this brings a smile to the hearts of many including Our Holy Father.

The Children Reach Out to Pope Francis

The picture above of Pope Francis was drawn by Alina Kaufman one of the children who is part of the Children's Rosary.  Pope Francis has always made it a priority to reach out to children where ever he goes.  In a special way, the children of the Children's Rosary would like to reach out to him and welcome him to the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia.  They have been praying for him in their Children's Rosary prayer groups around the world.  Now nine children will be traveling to Philadelphia from the Children's Rosary.  In the spirit of Pope Francis they will be evangelizing through love and joy.

The children will be staffing our Children's Rosary booth at the World Meeting of Families.  They will be talking about all of you and inviting others to begin Children's Rosary groups.   The children plan to stay for the week long meeting and also attend the outdoor Papal Mass although we will most likely be very far back in the crowds. I will also be accompanying the children this week.  Due to my joint disability that results in severe joint dislocations if I am bumped, the prospect of so many people is a bit daunting. So I ask for your prayers for all of us that we may be safe and that many beautiful blessings will come for the Children's Rosary.

Thank you all and please know we will be carrying you all in our heart and praying for you.

We Prayed For You

Yesterday we traveled to the National Shrine of Divine Mercy for Grandparents Day.  The children and I first held our normal monthly Children's Rosary at St. Thomas the Apostle in West Hartford Connecticut.  Once it was over we began our journey by car to the National Shrine.  Our dear friend Liz drove us.  As we entered into the Berkshires a thick fog rolled in over the hills and mountains that we passed through.  Mist covered the car.  We had heard the night before that the outdoor plans had been moved inside.  This news was welcome as the Church at the National Shrine is so breathtaking that I was overjoyed at the thought we might be able to hold the Children's Rosary inside the Church. As we entered the long driveway leading to the Shrine the sun came out.  There was no rain there.  We were told right away that we should go toward the Church as indeed we would be inside.  Many people were already gathered for the talks that had begun in the morning.  We had arrived late given our earlier commitment.  Shortly, more members of the Children's Rosary arrived from the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Waterbury Connecticut.

The children set to work bringing the pillows and flowers into the Church to set up for the Children's Rosary.  As soon as the talks had concluded we met with Fr. Gramlich the Rector at the Shrine of Divine Mercy and Alicia Belanger from the Catholic Grandparents Association.  Everything was unfolding beautifully.

Several other children were at Grandparents Day and we invited them to join us.  Three children came up to join our members.  We had an extra special blessing as the children were able to lead the Children's Rosary in front of the Blessed Sacrament.  All 8 children knelt the entire time they led the Rosary with beautiful reverence.  Each helping in some way either to place a rose before Our Lady or to help lead a decade.  All those in the pews responded to the prayers led by the children.  The power of the voices responding was so strong.  The Church is relatively small but with so many people in such a small space it felt as if there was one unified voice returning each of the prayers led by the children.  We began the Children's Rosary praying in a special way for Grandparents and also all the members of the Children's Rosary and all who were unifying prayers with us.  We shared with all present that many members of the Children's Rosary were unifying with us at the Shrine.  We felt very connected to you all and held you in our hearts in prayer.

At the conclusion of the Children's Rosary the children carried the yellow flowers they had to grandparents who had come to the event.  It was very sweet to see the children tenderly giving a rose to the grandmothers and grandfathers.  Mass soon followed with a beautiful entrance of the children carrying signs with messages about grandparents. The signs had been made by the Catholic Grandparents Association and were so precious. Following Holy Mass during the 3PM hour the Chaplet of Divine Mercy was prayed and there was veneration of a first class relic of St. Faustina.

Please know in a special way you all were held in prayer during the Chaplet and then also during veneration of several beautiful relics, those of St. John Paul II, St. Margaret Mary, St Peregrine and St. Faustina.  For my own part I prayed very hard for you all taking each tender moment to continually lift all the members of the Children's Rosary up in prayer.

There was a very special feeling the children were receiving many special graces that day.  Each seemed to share that the time went by so fast.  Indeed it was a true gift to be there and have an opportunity to pray for you all.

Seeing the children kneeling in prayer at the National Shrine of Divine Mercy was a humbling experience.  We are very grateful to Fr. Anthony Gramlich MIC and Alicia Belanger of the Catholic Grandparents Association for inviting the Children's Rosary to be a part of Grandparents Day.

Fr. Anthony Gramlich also shared that yesterday and today are very special days.  Eighty years ago, "St. Faustina first prayed the Chaplet of Divine Mercy on Sept 13th 1935. That is when she had the encounter with the Angel of Wrath. But Jesus revealed the full Chaplet on September 14th 1935, the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross".

I hope this little note brings a smile to your heart to know we were praying for you.  We thank you for being a part of the Children's Rosary and all your prayers and sacrifices.

Your Friend in Christ,
Blythe

Grandparents Day at the Shrine of Divine Mercy

National Shrine of Divine Mercy
We are excited to share that the Children's Rosary has been invited to hold a Children's Rosary at the Shrine of Divine Mercy as part of their Grandparents Day celebration this Sunday September 13th.  The Catholic Grandparents Association which is helping to organize this all day celebration reached out to the Children's Rosary in hopes that we could attend and hold a Children's Rosary.   As we were only able to connect this week it seemed maybe that there would not be enough time to put things together.  Yet many things began to fall into place and we felt that indeed we could attend and have the children come together and pray for our grandparents.  A full schedule of the day is included at the Divine Mercy website.

The Children's Rosary will be held at 1PM ET at the outdoor shrine during Eucharistic Adoration.  All are invited to attend.  Please know we will be praying for all of you.  If you are able to unify prayers with the children this would be an added blessing for all of us.

Members of the Children's Rosary are encouraged to come and help lead the Rosary. Children please bring your grandparents, too!!

Remembering a Loved One

St. Paul's School in Odell, Illinois USA  held a "living rosary" in memory of their beloved teacher and friend Mrs. Sullivan.  The rosary was led by the Children's Rosary  on a beautiful sunny day in April. After the Rosary, yellow roses were handed out by the family and balloons were released to the heavens in honor of Mrs Sullivan.  A "balloon lunch" followed at the school.

For many of these children the loss of their teacher may be the first time a loved one has died in their lives. It is beautiful to see how the the children were able to find consolation in prayer and also reach out to the family of their beloved teacher. The children found becoming the beads of the Rosary-a living Rosary-  a way to show their love.  Today many of us remember loss of life.  It is beautiful to follow the example of the children and use prayer as a salve for the heart.

The children of St. Paul's School will hold their monthly Children's Rosary today at 9:45 AM ET.  Please consider joining the Children in prayer.  They always pray for those unifying prayers with them.

A Gift to Our Blessed Mother

Yesterday we celebrated the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  We were very excited that a new Children's Rosary group met for the first time at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish in North Adams, Massachusetts USA.  Twelve children attended the first meeting.  It was particularly special to be able to celebrate Our Blessed Mother's Birthday by bringing her a new Children's Rosary group.

First Meeting of the Children's Rosary at St. Gregory the Great Parish

The first meeting of the Children's Rosary at St. Gregory the Great Parish in Bristol, Connecticut USA was held this past Saturday.  The new group was Consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immmaculate Heart of Mary.  In this way, the group is under the potection and guidance of Christ and His Mother.  The timing of this first meeting was special as we celebrated the Feast of St. Gregory the Great, patron of this parish, last Thursday.  This is our first Children's Rosary in a parish named after St. Gretory the Great.

There were seven children who attended the first meeting of this Children's Rosary group.  They beautifully placed roses before Our Blessed Mother during the Rosary.  This new group plans to meet on the first Saturday of each month at 2:15 PM ET.  This new group leader also shared that she is planning to begin another Children's Rosary at St. Matthew Parish in Forestville, Connecticut. Their first meeting will be held in October on the first Sunday of the month.

Please keep all the Children's Rosary group leaders in your prayers.  They are reaching out to a great many little ones and doing such important work bringing our children together in prayer.  We thank you for your prayers.  Please be assured the children are praying for all or you.

Happy Birthday, Mary!

We are beginning to receive notes from Children's Rosary groups holding early birthday celebrations for Our Blessed Mother.   Yesterday, I received these pictures from the Children's Rosary at St. Agnes Church in Naples, Florida USA.  They meet each month on the first Saturday to hold their Children's Rosary.  Yesterday the children presented Our Blessed Mother with flowers and handmade birthday cards in anticipation of the Nativity of Our Blessed Mother which will be celebrated on September 8th.
The group at St. Agnes held a little birthday party outside the chapel after the Rosary.  The children enjoyed the festivities with special sweets that were brought for the party.

It is beautiful to contemplate Our Blessed Mother's response to so many children remembering her birthday.  As the children kneel in prayer of the Rosary ending each decade with a flower which is put at her feet, might a gentle loving smile come across her face.  It warms the heart to think of Our Blessed Mother so happy.  If these little ones praying touch our hearts what must their Heavenly Mother think when she sees them all coming to pray with her?

Indeed Our Lord must also take special joy in seeing his Mother remembered.

A special thank you to all the members of the Children's Rosary that give so much of themselves to help our children have such a tender relationship with Our Blessed Mother and her Son.

Mass Offered Today for Renewal of Family Prayer

Children's Rosary in Uncasville Connecticut USA
A Mass was offered today for Renewal of Family Prayer. In a special way the Children's Rosary has been praying for renewal of family prayer.  We have said over 850 Novenas to different Saints asking for their intercession and help renewing family prayer in our families.  We also have a Mass offered on the first Saturday of the month for the same intention.  One of the members of the Children's Rosary was so kind to sponsor a Mass each month for this intention for one year.  As more and more children come together in prayer of the Rosary in their Children's Rosary prayer groups we pray that prayer also blossoms in their homes as well and throughout the world.  Pope John Paul II was fond of saying, "As the family goes, so goes the nation and so goes the whole world in which we live."

We are excited to share that members of the Children's Rosary will be traveling to the World Meeting of Families in just over two weeks.  The Children's Rosary will have an informational booth at the meeting. Eight children will be there to answer questions and explain how to begin a Children's Rosary prayer group in parishes.

Children are a very important part of families.  They have a unique ability to help bring prayer back into homes.

Poorest of the Poor

Tomorrow we remember in a special way Bl. Mother Teresa of Calcutta.  Her name has almost become synonymous with helping the poorest of the poor.  Last year at this time we had the wonderful blessing to spend time with the sisters of Charity in Bridgeport Connecticut USA.  The Sisters held a Children's Rosary at their convent.  We had members of our Children's Rosary group from the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Waterbury, CT and the children the sisters work with in Bridgeport praying together.  It was beautiful to see the children all kneeling in the sisters' chapel before the large crucifix on the wall with the words I thirst.  Next to the children was a picture of Mother Theresa with a first class relic.

In many ways it seems that Mother Teresa has been close to the Children's Rosary.  We are blessed to have a Children's Rosary prayer group in a parish named after Bl. Mother Teresa of Calcutta in Kenya.  We have also seen the beauty of children from all walks of life coming together on their knees to pray the Rosary, a prayer that was so dear to Mother Teresa.  Some of our Children's Rosary groups are from very poor regions of the world.  Yet the children are able to bring joy to the bleakest of situations.  Some of our groups in Pakistan are fond of taking to the streets each day to pray with the poor and sick.  Children from Angola to Australia to Canada can be found in these little Children's Rosary groups. They come to prayer with simplicity and open hearts.

On this eve of the Feast of Bl. Mother Teresa in a special way we ask for her intercession for all members of the Children's Rosary. May we all be carriers of peace and charity in this world. Amen.

Over the next week we have many Children's Rosary groups meeting.  Please consider joining the children in prayer.  The children always pray for those unifying prayers with them.
